RUBRECHT SEVERENS FINE ARTS | WIESBADEN – MAASTRICHT | PRESS RELEASE

Since 2018 the two galleries Rubrecht Contemporary and PontArte Art Gallery located in Wiesbaden and Maastricht, respectively, have joined forces to promote represented artists in both cities, as well as to present a selected number of artists at art fairs. Over the last three years Leander Rubrecht and Marieke Severens have worked on increasing the visibility of their artists to a more international audience. This effort has resulted in many exhibitions and collaborations where artists from both galleries are teamed up to present their work. For instance, El Ego, Christine Straszewski (represented by Rubrecht Contemporary) and Greet Weitenberg (represented by PontArte) created an exhibition first to be seen in Wiesbaden and, consecutively, in Maastricht. Marc Prat and Oriol Texidor exhibited in Wiesbaden whereas Johannes Kriesche and KA+MA took over the gallery space in Maastricht in 2021.

Apart from the fruitful collaboration connecting both cities, a selection of artists is taken to fairs, where the aim is to present a thoughtfully curated overview of the artists’ work and the galleries per se. The proposition for Art Karlsruhe 2022 is an open, yet interconnected space where every artist gets their own section. The focus will be on providing an adequate insight into the artists’ work rather than just selling artworks. More specifically, the idea is to offer an experience that arouses interest by exploring the booth and simultaneously discovering the artists individually. The interplay and curation will almost create the impression of visiting distinct exhibitions within the booth itself. An additional collector’s room, which displays smaller and collectible artworks, further contributes to an almost gallery-like flair.

The presented artists range from emerging artists, namely Dorine van der Ploeg (NL) and Lena Krashevka (BLR), to well-established artists like Manfred Maria Rubrecht (DE), Nina Stoelting (DE) and the sculptors Stefan Faas (DE) and Gábor Török (HUN). This variety is equally highlighted by the conceptual artist Christine Straszewski (DE), whose focus lays primarily on painting, the society questioning work by the duo Marta & Slava (RU) and the monumental work by Marc Prat (ES). Marta and Slava will show their project “Will Beauty Save the World”, which consists of a series of watercolours from statues in European cities that have become “obsolete”. Their proposition is to turn these “beautiful” objects into living spaces for refugees and the homeless. Manfred Maria Rubrecht will present paintings and objects, where, for instance, 2 baboons discuss the current ecological circumstances. In her work, Christine Straszewski explores the boundaries of polarisation whereas Dorine van der Ploeg creates collages that allow abstract and figurative images to arise.

Both galleries have their respective identity, based on exhibition programs and artist portfolios. However, the collaboration has led to a number of shows that surprised collectors in both Maastricht and Wiesbaden alike. The international approach is not only rewarding for the artists and the galleries, but results in a portfolio, which is well-balanced between emerging and established artists, all with different styles. Finally, it is from utmost importance to us to balance between male and female artists.

In collaboration with the city of Frankfurt and the Messegesellschaft Frankfurt, it was from utmost importance to us that the third edition of Discovery Art Fair could take place on the fairgrounds. Most probably, there will be additional hygiene measures due to new regulations in October/November. However, the hygiene concept of Messe Frankfurt is comprehensible and feasible. In order for the art to be the only "infectious" thing about the fair and as the health and well-being of our exhibitors, visitors and staff is from the highest priority, we will, obviously, implement the measures in the best way possible.
